Every happy adoption photo has a story behind it.
The photo of a dog jumping into their new family’s arms. The first car ride home. The couch they finally get to call their own.
Those moments are why we do what we do—but they often come after days, weeks, or even months of unseen work by a team that has loved, treated, monitored, and fought for that animal every step of the way.
That team is our clinic team.
At Three Little Pitties Rescue, our clinic is so much more than a place where animals receive vaccines or routine checkups. It is where some of the most vulnerable animals begin their journey toward healing.
Under the leadership of our Clinic Director, Lainey Barrentine, and an incredible team of veterinary professionals, our clinic handles everything from preventative care and diagnostics to emergency cases, complex medical treatments, rehabilitation, and the everyday care that keeps hundreds of rescue animals healthy as they wait for their forever families.
It takes medical knowledge, quick thinking, teamwork, and an enormous amount of compassion to do this work. And often, the hardest parts of these animals’ stories happen behind the scenes, far away from the adoption photos and happy endings everyone gets to see.
The Reality of Rescue Medicine
There is no such thing as a predictable day in rescue medicine.
One moment, the team may be preparing healthy puppies for transport to their forever homes. The next, they may be rushing to stabilize a dog who has arrived severely injured, monitoring a litter of sick puppies, or creating a treatment plan for an animal whose future depends on immediate medical care.
Every day requires the clinic team to adapt, problem-solve, and show up for animals who cannot advocate for themselves.
Recently, that commitment has been tested more than ever as our team has worked tirelessly through a distemper outbreak affecting animals in our care.
While we share pieces of the journey, they only show a small glimpse of what is happening inside the clinic walls. Behind the scenes are countless hours spent adjusting protocols, implementing additional safety measures, maintaining strict isolation procedures, monitoring symptoms around the clock, administering treatments, and ensuring every animal still receives the love and attention they deserve.
It has meant long days, late nights, and an emotional weight that only those in rescue truly understand.
And still, every single day, they show up.
They celebrate the small victories—a puppy finally eating after days without an appetite, a patient gaining strength, a wagging tail from a dog who is finally beginning to feel safe.
They sit quietly with scared animals. They learn their favorite treats. They comfort them during treatments and celebrate every little milestone along the way.
Because to our clinic team, these animals are never just patients.
They are individuals with stories that deserve a better ending.
The Cases They Never Gave Up On
Some animals arrive needing a simple exam and a little extra TLC.
Others arrive carrying a lifetime of hardships in their tiny bodies.
Angel was one of those animals.
When Angel came into our care, this little Frenchie had been through more than any dog should ever have to endure. She was found abandoned in a Houston neighborhood, covered in blood and in terrible condition. While we may never know everything she experienced before she was rescued, what was clear from the moment she arrived was that she needed help—and she needed a team willing to fight for her.
Her list of medical challenges was long: a broken jaw, a previously broken front leg with a metal plate already in place, painful skin infections, allergies, breathing difficulties, and signs that she had recently had puppies.
It would have been easy to look at everything stacked against her and feel overwhelmed.
But that’s not what our clinic team does.
They looked at Angel and saw a dog worth saving. Over the weeks and months that followed, our clinic team worked through every challenge that came her way. She needed jaw surgery, BOAS surgery to help her breathe comfortably, a spay procedure, ongoing treatment for her skin and allergies, and countless check-ins to make sure she was healing every step of the way.
There were setbacks. It felt like every time one challenge was overcome, another appeared.
But Angel kept going.
And so did the people fighting for her.
One year later, Angel’s story looks completely different. The scared, hurting dog who arrived needing so much help is now a beloved member of her family. Her foster mom, Colleen, became the ultimate foster fail, and Angel now spends her days exactly how every dog deserves—surrounded by love, getting endless snuggles, and keeping her brother in line.
Her journey is a reminder of why our clinic team keeps showing up, even on the hardest days.
Because rescue is messy.
It is heartbreaking.
It is exhausting.
It is expensive.
But then you look at a dog like Angel—healthy, safe, and deeply loved—and you remember exactly why every surgery, every overnight check, every difficult decision, and every extra hour matters.
Growing a Clinic That Can Save More Lives
The clinic team at Three Little Pitties has grown tremendously over the years.
What started with a small but determined team doing everything possible with the resources they had has grown into a robust medical department capable of providing more comprehensive care than ever before.
Today, the clinic team is able to perform diagnostics, provide preventative and ongoing medical care, treat complex illnesses, manage recovery plans, and support animals through some of the toughest moments of their lives.
One of the biggest milestones in that growth has been the addition of our in-house surgery suite.
For a rescue that takes in animals with significant medical needs, having the ability to perform surgeries onsite has been life-changing. It means our team can move more quickly when animals need urgent procedures, keep their care under one roof, closely monitor their recovery, and continue expanding the number of animals we are able to say “yes” to.
Every improvement to our clinic, every new piece of equipment, and every expanded capability means more animals receiving the care they desperately need.
Because when a dog like Angel walks through our doors, we want to have every possible tool available to help write a new chapter of their story.
The Team Behind the Happy Endings
It’s easy to fall in love with the before-and-after photos.
The dog who learns to run again.
The puppy who finally gets a clean bill of health.
The scared animal who discovers what it feels like to trust.
But behind every one of those transformations is a team of people who walked through the hardest part of the journey with them.
The days when progress felt slow.
The days when there were setbacks.
The days when the outcome was uncertain.
They celebrated every ounce gained, every good test result, every playful moment, and every sign that an animal was finally feeling like themselves again.
The clinic team doesn’t get to skip over the hard parts of rescue.
They live them. And they choose to come back the next morning and do it all over again.
To our clinic team: thank you for the early mornings, the late nights, the emergency calls, the endless cleaning, the difficult decisions, and the compassion you give to every single animal who comes through our doors.
