More Foster Homes, More Lives Saved: How Three Little Pitties Rescue's Foster Team Creates Second Chances Every Day

Every rescue story starts with a simple question:
Where will this animal go tonight?
For thousands of dogs and cats across Houston and beyond, the answer to that question can mean the difference between life and death.
While many people picture rescue as kennels, adoption events, and transport trucks, the truth is that one of the most important parts of our lifesaving work happens in living rooms, kitchens, spare bedrooms, and backyards across the country.
It happens in foster homes.
At Three Little Pitties Rescue, our foster team is the foundation that makes rescue possible. Every animal who enters our program needs a safe place to land - a place to decompress, heal, learn to trust, and prepare for life with a forever family.
Without foster homes, many of the animals we save simply wouldn't have a place to go.
The Heart of Rescue

Every day, our intake team receives urgent messages about animals in need.
A pregnant mom about to give birth in a shelter. A puppy found abandoned on the side of the road. A senior dog whose owner passed away. A scared stray who has never known kindness.
The desire to help is always there. Lack of space can limit our ability.
Foster homes give us the ability to say "yes."
When a foster family opens their home, they create room for another life to be saved. One foster placement can set off a chain reaction that allows us to rescue multiple animals who might not otherwise have a chance. We typically have around 800 cats and dogs in foster homes, with almost 200 waiting for a foster at any given time!
More Than a Temporary Home
Fostering is about much more than roof over their heads.
For many animals, it's the first time they've experienced the comforts most of us take for granted..
A soft bed, a quiet place to sleep, consistent meals, patience, and love.
Foster families help anxious dogs learn that people can be safe and trusted. They help puppies learn basic manners. They give medical cases an encouraging environment to recover. They provide valuable information about personality and behavior that helps us find the perfect home..
They celebrate firsts that many animals have never experienced before: first toys, first walks, first couch naps, and sometimes even the first time being truly loved.
These moments may seem small, but they are often life-changing.
Fostering as a Family

While fostering changes the lives of the animals who enter our homes, it often changes the people caring for them, too.
For many families, fostering becomes an opportunity to teach compassion, responsibility, patience, and empathy in a way that can't be learned from a textbook. Children get a front-row seat to the power of helping others, watching scared puppies grow in confidence and seeing firsthand how small acts of kindness can completely change a life.
The Clunie family is a perfect example.
Sarah and her elementary-aged daughters have become familiar faces in our foster program, regularly opening their home to puppies in need. What started as a way to help rescue animals has become a family mission, with each foster teaching valuable lessons about caring for others and making room for those who need a little extra support.
No one has embraced that mission more enthusiastically than Sarah's youngest daughter, Hazel.

After helping foster puppy after puppy, Hazel has developed such a love for rescue that she set an ambitious goal for herself in 2026: foster 18 puppies in one year. Thanks to the Clunie family's constant and continuous "yes" to animals in need, they're already well on their way.
Beyond the adorable puppy snuggles and playtime, the Clunies are helping raise the next generation of animal advocates. Every puppy that comes through their home leaves with a better chance at finding a forever family, and every foster experience helps strengthen the empathy and compassion that Hazel and her sisters carry with them long after the puppies move on to their adoptive homes.
Way to go, Clunie family! Thank you for showing what is possible when an entire family comes together to make a difference, one puppy at a time.
The Foster Team Behind the Scenes
Our foster team works tirelessly to support both the animals and the people caring for them.
They recruit new fosters, answer late-night questions, coordinate placements, provide resources, troubleshoot challenges, and help ensure that every foster family feels supported throughout the journey.
When a foster says yes to helping an animal, our team is there every step of the way.
From newborn puppies and nursing moms to medical cases and long-term residents, the foster team helps make sure each foster is equipped to give the individualized care the animal needs and deserves.
It's work that often happens behind the scenes, but its impact can be seen in every adoption photo and every happy ending.
Why Space Matters

As our rescue continues to grow, so does the need for bigger facilities that support our foster network.
Today, we save thousands of animals each year. Our foster team coordinates an enormous number of placements, supplies, and support services to keep animals moving toward adoption.
But we've outgrown many of the spaces and systems we've relied on for years.
That's where community support matters.
Our vision for a new facility isn't just about buildings. It's about creating the resources needed to support the people and animals who make lifesaving possible. The campaign would give potential foster families inside space to spend time with animals to see if they would be a match for their home. It would also provide a space to hold larger pop up trainings and empower people to undertake new areas of fostering like neonates or hospice fosters.
Every improvement helps strengthen the foster program that sits at the center of our rescue mission.
Building a Future Where We Can Say "Yes"
One of the hardest parts of rescue is knowing that there are still animals waiting.
Waiting in shelters.
Waiting on the streets.
Waiting for someone to step forward.
Our foster team works every day to create opportunities for those animals, but we know we can do more.
With the support of our community, we can continue to build the infrastructure needed to expand our lifesaving efforts, strengthen our foster program, and create more opportunities to say "yes" when animals need us most.
Because behind every adoption is a foster hero.
Behind every second chance is a volunteer who opened their heart.
And behind every life saved is a community that believes those lives are worth saving.
Together, we can build a future where more animals find safety, more foster families receive support, and more lives are transformed.
One foster home, and one rescued pet, at a time.
